ABOUT SUMMER CAMP
Westmoreland Performing Arts’ Summer Theatre Camp is a one-of-a-kind experience where students train with professional artists and develop their skills in acting, singing, and dance. Our staff includes Equity actors, directors, and working industry professionals, ensuring a high-quality, immersive theatre education unlike any other local performance camp.
Camp runs Monday to Friday from 9:00am - 4:00pm, with daily core classes in Acting, Voice, and Dance, broken into ability levels so every student is challenged at the right pace. Students gain a wealth of knowledge in a fast-paced, exciting environment while making friendships that last a lifetime.
At WPA, every child is welcome. We foster a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment with zero tolerance for bullying so that all students feel encouraged to be themselves.
Acting
This class introduces students to the fundamentals of acting, including theatre terminology, performance techniques, and ensemble work. Rooted in Meisner-based training, students will explore improvisation, voice and speech, physicality, and text analysis through engaging exercises. Using poetry, monologues, and scenes, they’ll build confidence, develop storytelling skills, and learn to connect with an audience, all while having fun with warm-up games and creative exploration!
Voice
Our summer voice classes help students develop strong, healthy vocal technique through a mix of ensemble and solo work. Students will explore breath control, tone placement, sight-singing, and intonation, along with music theory and performance skills like belting and acting through song. With an emphasis on confidence and expression, this class is perfect for singers looking to refine their skills, whether for fun or in preparation for college auditions and musical theatre programs.
Dance
This high-energy, multi-level class introduces dancers to technique, terminology, and choreography while building precision, musicality, and adaptability. Students will develop their skills through center work, across-the-floor combinations, and dynamic warm-ups, exploring styles such as Tap, Modern, and Ballet. Whether you're a beginner eager to learn or an experienced dancer looking for a challenge, this fast-moving and engaging class will help you grow in confidence, skill, and artistry!
Masterclass
Each summer, students have the exclusive opportunity to learn from renowned industry professionals through our masterclasses. These sessions offer expert guidance, skill refinement, and firsthand insights into the world of professional theatre. This year, we are thrilled to welcome Claudia Benack from Carnegie Mellon University’s Musical Theatre Voice department, Broadway performers Lenora Nemetz and Allan Snyder, and Equity actor Hope Anthony. These masterclasses are an invaluable experience for students looking to expand their knowledge, refine their craft, and be inspired by top professionals in the industry.
Rehearsal
Rehearsals run after lunch until 4 PM, starting with a stress-free audition on the first day. Lead roles are often double or triple cast, and rehearsals begin with music before moving into choreography and staging.
Students should wear comfortable clothing and shoes and bring a pencil for taking notes. During the final four days of camp, rehearsals move to the theatre, where students get comfortable performing on stage.
Success comes from teamwork and dedication, so let’s bring the production to life together!
Shooting Stars Camp
As taught by Renata Marino, Stars of Tomorrow Camp is a chance for our youngest students to receive their first training in theatre. This is the perfect starting point for anyone interested in being on stage. Students are encouraged to stretch their imaginations, increase their confidence, and create characters. Many of our finest performers have started in this program. Students play theatre games, learn the basics of singing, take beginner tap and jazz classes, and take part in a live performance at the end of camp. This summer the camp will culminate with a production of Performances with be held at the Greensburg Garden Center.
Big Dreamers Broadway Squad Camp
WPA’s Big Dreamers Broadway Squad is one of the most exciting programs available for people of all-abilities in the region! We use drama, music and dance in innovative and ground-breaking ways, to reach and engage autistic individuals and people with special needs, encouraging them to discover new things about themselves and theworld around them. Developed by Renata Marino and based on national autism programs, this experience engages and challenges the individual, and results in increased awareness and cognitive abilities. Additionally, it encourages them to connect with themselves, social situations and each other in deep and enriching ways. Students will work on a collaborative theatrical production that they will perform at The Greensburg Garden Center.
